As a followup to last years post on winter sailing, I’ve been doing a bunch of lessons this fall and early winter on the coast, and it has been fantastic! The weather that has made it all possible is full sunny days where the temperatures have a high of near 65 degrees or more, with moderate winds. When the temperatures are just reaching 65, we have been wearing shorts, a long sleeve swim shirt, a light jacket, a wind breaker jacket, and a Body Glove life jacket that almost acts like a wetsuit top. This has been incredibly comfortable and flexible, even when the winds have been blowing 12 mph with higher gusts! Of course, with the higher winds, there is more water splash and spray, but the windbreaker makes that a non-issue, and we have been doing 3 hour sessions, with huge smiles the whole time! We won’t be doing capsizing drills, but we can train everything else!. If you thought it was too cold in December to sail, think again, winter sailing is absolutely doable and comfortable! Come get a lesson soon.
